Elephant's Trunk <Widefield>

Really pleased with this image.

I wanted to show the full scale of one of the largest emission nebulae and capture some of the surrounding dark nebulosity. This target was a great test of my new modified Canon 350D, and I feel it has soaked up the Ha well. It's the first image that I have spent a reasonable amount of time on and imaged over two nights.

On both nights the conditions were good and everything just seemed to come together nicely! Love it when that happens (not often)

See my flickr page for a larger version

Feel free to have a play with the image, I can't seem to do much about some funny gradients.

Thanks for looking.... :icon_eek:

Darks and flats applied in DeepSkyStacker tweaked in CS3 + Noel's actions.

Yikes, Jordan, that is an E-normous field of view! I thought mine was a widefield but I can forget that idea... Great piece of work.

Looking at the right hand side of your image I can see the source of what I feared was a yellow gradient in mine but in this hyper-widefield shot we see the source very clearly.

I'd be inclined to call this IC1396 rather than the elephant trunk because ot is sooooo big!

Congratulations, really,

Olly.

Thanks Pete and Olly,

Yeah should call it IC1396 it is massive.

Astrometry says,

Hello, this is the blind astrometry solver. Your results are:

(RA, Dec) center: 324.74303264, 57.0285978062 degrees

(RA, Dec) center (H:M:S, D:M:S): 21:38:58.328, +57:01:42.952

Orientation:-88.43 deg E of N

Pixel scale:21.28 arcsec/pixel

Parity:Reverse ("Left-handed")

Field size :6.05 x 3.88 degrees

And this is a slight crop :icon_eek:

It puts the size of the nebula in context, I think, and I love being able to see the dark nebulosity whizzing around the place..

Thanks again.... Jordan
