Volcanic sunset

Recommended Posts

Reports are coming in all over the world about these wonderful purple sunsets due to the Russian volcano Sarychev Peak. We captured this on the evening of the 29th - absolutely spectacular. Canon 350D 27mm lens -taken near Birr Ireland.

It certainly is spectacular, but I don't think this is a volcanic effect - it's just the sun shining onto the uneven bottom of the clouds. The "volcanic sunset" shows up as unusual orange/red/purple coloration of the clear sky some time after sunset (15 - 30 minutes, maybe to 45 minutes at this time of year when the sun sets at a very shallow angle to the horizon).
