Ryehill obsy build part 1

Well I'm calling it The Ryehill Observatory which is a bit of a pompous sounding name I suppose. My wife refers to it as The Mosque or has also suggested WAFT (waste of flaming time). Any other suggestions gratefully received.

Building work has been going on over the past week so here are a few pics. The concrete base of the ground floor building has turned out to be 2 layers of reinforced concrete 19" thick. We are hacking through 1 square metre and going down to a depth of 1m. Below the concrete it is dense clay.

The brickwork will be 11 courses then a fascia panel covering the joists and then a GRP upstand to support the dome itself.

The ceiling pic shows where the concrete tower goes up to. There will be a 1" space around the tower.

Hope to get the dome in place by the end of next week.

Thanks guys. Coliea, I am having installed a Pulsar 2.7m dome and working with a very talented builder. I am giving him detailed instructions on requirements, he is making suggestions of it's own and putting it all into practice. The roof construction is entirely his doing.

Nice one. I was just trying to see from the pics how it was built. Its not another level on an existing building is it? It looks very high but is that just to give you a decent elevation on the dome rather than because the whole build sits on top of something else?

There is a slope down into the garden. A garage is built along this slope so higher at the rear than the front. Attached to the back of the garage is a brick shed the roof of which is lower than the garage roof. The observatory is on top of this shed.

The pics with the update here show things better http://stargazerslounge.com/diy-astronomer/82618-ryehill-obsy-build-part-2-a.html
