Infrared light is separated out and sent down the fibre optic cables to other instruments for analysis.  Visible light passes through as normal and is used for alignment and tracking.

Well , if you cant see it, your scope and e/ps are frozen over, your toes are blue, your hands are cold and sore, you are probably in the early stages of  hypothermia  and its pointless trying to pick your nose. hahah

Mine last night was telling me what I already knew - it was cold!

I assume it's actually there as an indication of acclimatisation
