Why does my solar observation look like this ?

Recommended Posts

Hi there,

I just started with solar observation for the record (just so I dont come across as an idiot). I was wondering why I am seeing so many black spots ? I know there are black spots on the sun but this is a bit much isn't it? my optics appear to be clean as well.

The picture was taken with my phone so you have to excuse the quality here.

I use a 12" dobsonian with Baadre ERF filter 70mm aperture with a Daystar Quarts Chromosphere.

Cheers guys

The black spots that you see are in the eyepiece or on the Daystar. The Sun itself appears to be not focused. Today there were only two minor sunspots, see my white-light image of this morning.

You can easily check the location of those black spots by rotating the eyepiece or the Daystar independently.

Hey guys,

Thank you for the replier  :) I know I made a mistake here, now I know what.

Again, thank you for the information!

How did you have this setup? With a sub aperture ERF on the front of your dob? I guess that could work, but a refractor is so much easier and better.
