Sol in H⍺- 17 July 2021

The 17th July offered lots of opportunities for imaging and observing the Sun. There was a new area of activity, without a spot, that developed over 24 hours into a full Active Region, a lovely prominence on the north west limb plus another new Active Region on the south east limb.

Image 1 & 2 - As always we start with the full disc to get our bearings on what is on show. 150 of the best 1,000 frames stacked. Exposure time 3.5 ms, Gain = 0. That prominence looks gorgeous.

Images 3 & 4 - A new active region, AR12844 classified Axx, very low down on the south east limb. Sun spots are rare in this area but are typical for the start of a new solar cycle. It’s always tricky imaging close to a limb so I look forward to seeing how this one develops as it moves across the solar disc. 165 of the best 1,000 frames stacked. Exposure time 14 ms, Gain 65.

Images 5 & 6 - AR12842 classification Hsx, now fairly central on the disc. 179 of the best 1,000 frames stacked. Exposure time 14ms, Gain 60.

Images 7 & 8 - Classified as an Active Region without a sun spot, this region developed into AR12845 over the next 24 hours. 274 of the best 1,000 frames stacked. Exposure time 14ms, Gain 60.

Images 9 & 10 - Cropped version of images 5 & 6 giving a closer view of AR12842.

Images 11 & 12 - That wonderful prominence on the north west limb and an estimation of its height. 25% of the best 500 frames stacked. Exposure time 30ms, Gain = 210.

Finally a short time-lapse of AR12842. 100 x 500 frames with a 30 second gap stacked. Cropped and sharpened in PixInsight, aligned in ImPPG, resampled in PixInsight and GIF generated in PIPP. Not the activity I was hoping for but a lovely fluffy chromosphere rug to scrunch your toes in!
