Bumbling around the Beehive

I thought I would give a few doubles in and around the Beehive (M44) a go last night.

There is so much going on, I needed a printout to guide my way and I ended up adding notes and basic sketches on that. I was pleased with the result even though I guess many/most are visual rather than actual binaries?

As you can see, I am not sure about SLE337 and so have marked two candidates which were next to one another. I may have to check Stellarium again.

It took most of the observing session but I did manage to catch Iota Cancri (5* Y+B) and I am pretty certain I got Struve 1266 (3* Y+B), Phi-2 CNC (3* B+B) and the very close 57 CNC (3* WB+WB).

A nice personal  record, and a tangible reason why sometimes a paper map really is better than a 'phone app !

I'd add the date and equipment used .... I bet you wrote it on the back already !

Great. That's so helpful. I've been trying to see as many doubles as I can from the Cambridge Double Star Atlas. I find it really hard to find the ones in the clusters. The map isn't big enough for me to see which ones I should be looking at. Thanks very much.

That was exactly the problem I had and why the screen capture method works for me when the going gets tough. I did the same when I had problems with M1 - https://astro.catshill.com/finding-dim-objects/

Good work! Double stars in open clusters are a treat to observe. Sounds like you had a great time!

Now that tells me you use a telescope that inverts N and S 🙂

Bromsgrove, the Rome of the midlands ( and Bromsgrove really was an ecclesiastical centre once ... ) and Brum, the Venice ditto 🙂
