My first photos with the Samyang 135mm (NGC7000, Andromeda et. al)

Recommended Posts

I received my Samyang 135mm F/2.0 about a week ago today and on wednesday I went to my grandparent's house on my holiday. I was lucky enough that the first two nights were clear and I was very happy to be under Bortle 4 skies compared to the Bortle 7-8 at home.

I used the opportunity to capture some of my favourite deep sky objects visible during the summer and I'm very satisfied with them. I do want to add more data to the veil nebula image though.

Equipment:
Nikon D3300, unmodified
Samyang 135mm F/2.0
Unguided Skywatcher Star adventurer
Manfrotto 055xpro

Capture details:
All the images are shot at F/2.8 and ISO 800, stacked in Deep Sky stacker and processed in Adobe Lightroom.

C/2020 F3 NEOWISE - 7X60sec (7min total)
Veil nebula - 11X90sec (16.5min total)
Andromeda galaxy - 14X90sec (21min total)
Dumbbell nebula - 10X90sec (15min total)
North American nebula - 26X120sec (52min total)

This might be my last NEOWISE image since the weather is not looking good in the next couple of days but I'm also very satisfied with it, and I really like the green color in the coma of the comet.

As mentioned previously, I'd really like to add more data to this image and try to squeeze out more color and detail in the veil itself. I really like the fov of this lens since it also captures a lot of the dark lanes in the milky way.

I'm suprised with the amount of detail in the galaxy itself and you can really see how large andromeda is when shot at this focal length!

Dumbbell is still a little too small at this focal length, but I really like how it's floating among the thousands of other stars and the milky way!

Finally the North American nebula:) I'm really satisfied with this image, and I'm very surprised that my unmodified Nikon D3300 manages to capture so much color in the nebula despite it being unmodified. At first I shot about 16min worth of exposures but I added another 36min the night after and it really helped reduce the noise and increase detail in the nebula. In my opinion the size of this object is perfect for the focal length of this lens!

I'm very excited to use the Samyang 135mm even more while I'm at my grandparents' house with a Bortle 4 sky, and I'm suprised with the built quality and sharpness of this lens! At F/2.8 the edges are very sharp with no to little vignetting. I do eventually want to try to do some mosaics with this lens since it's so sharp and the focal length is great at capturing a lot more detail than my 50mm f/1.8 prime lens.

Thanks for looking! Clear skies!

That’s a great set. It is a great lens, but your processing certainly makes the most of it. :)

Thank you Richard! After a couple years using Lightroom I suddenly know a couple of tricks:laugh:
