A virtual tour of Atik's production facility.

I found this very interesting since I've often wondered how production of specialist cameras was organized. In the past I've had great personal service from Rui, who takes us on this virtual tour, and I remain an enthusiastic Atik user. I've no vested interests other than as a happy user.

Very interesting, always a sign of a well run company when they let the cameras in.  The AP camera market is clearly not high volume production and I can fully understand why CCD cameras especially, are the price they are.

Having  just prepared a talk for my local Astro Club entitled “Astrophotography Then and Now”, contrasting the emulsion film era with the technology we now have at our disposal, it certainly is a great time to be around to pursue this hobby.

Manufacturing is in Portugal, but I have had the priviledge of meeting Atik's people at its Norwich UK HQ. What impressed me most was how it employs its own developers, produces its own software and hence has seamless quality control over all facets.

This wholly in-house operation is why Atik Infinity software is so easy to use as it is not attempting to support the myriad of cameras in the wider market. Software buttons can hence directly support dedicated features such as easy to use presets. The ASCOM universal standard is great for experienced users, but for new entrants, third party software can be bewildering. Atik cameras will still work through ASCOM with other software suites, but Atik Infinity being dedicated to Atik camera features provides a fantastic straight out of the box experience, hence easy for newbies. Interestingly, ZWO now seem to be heading in the same direction having been previously dependent on third party software.

It is well worth checking out Atiks YouTube videos, especially those that explain CCD and CMOS and how they cleverly reduce read noise in the latter. The demonstrations of Atik Infinity software are eye-opening as regards ease and simplicity.
