Astronomik 0iii filter visual use

Recommended Posts

I'm considering buying a 2 inch 0iii filter for visual use.

Can someone please advise if they make much difference visually for deep sky.

Also is it worth paying the high price for an astronomik filter over a baader.

On targets that emit O-III lines, they are really effective. The Veil and Owl nebulae spring to mind but there are a number of others as well. The difference that an O-III filter can make has noticably more impact than a UHC filter on such objects.

I've owned both the Baader O-III and an Astronomik O-III and much preferred the latter. The Baader is decent quality but it's band pass is quite a bit narrower than the Astronomik which, for me, resulted in dimming of background stars more than I wanted. This characteristic also means that the Baader is not effective with smaller aperture scopes whereas the Astronomik O-III most certainly is.

The illustration below of the impact of a good O-III filter under a dark sky is not exaggerated in my experience:

I’ve had a the Astronomik OIII in both 1.25” and 2” versions and have been very pleased with it. The 1.25” was effective even in my 130mm reflector. I’ve used the 2” to see the Veil in my 80mm frac though it was very faint. Both of these I got secondhand. It’s worth posting a wanted Ad if you’re looking to save some pennies :)

You may well have seen this link before but it rates the OIII filter and a couple of other types against a number of nebula. The ratings will give you an idea of how much improvement to expect against some specific objects.

I've the Astronomik O-III too, and it works great - I couldn't believe the enhancement on The Veil in my 10" on the first night I tried it; highly recommended for many targets!  (can't comment re Baader)

It's worth remembering/noting that the comparisons for that report were done under dark skies. Where you are also combating light pollution the narrower OIII filters will probably perform better on more targets.
