is it worth getting an old FD 50mm 1.4 and adapter? i can get one with an adapter for half the price of an ef50 1.8. 

are there any issues when using for astro?

Should be ok providing that you can focus to infinity - this can be an issue so check that first.

hoping someone with experience of this lens might jump in, its really tempting at the price but useless if it wont focus. im struggling to focus my 18-55 kit lens at the moment and hoping i have better luck with a prime.

FD lens will not focus to infinity on an EOS naturally.

The adaptor sold that provides infinity focus has an optic in it. This reduces the quality of the image. Canon did do one back when EOS first came out but wont find that for sale. Stopping the lens down does help but it's not perfect. I've got some and use with a straight adaptor as they make great macro lens.

However an EOS-m will reach infinity focus naturally with an FD lens.

Why not buy a second hand 50mm f1.8 or 40mm f2.8 pancake lens, I use one of the latter it is great walkabout lens and at f4 good star shape at night.

well im in the process of saving for a samyang 16mm f2 and a SW ED72 but thought at £40-50 for the FD it might be worth a punt but obviously not.

You should be ok with the ef 50 1.8..fascinating lens, i use them often at f3.2 as the image inattach is at f3.2

You had much better success with your adaptor I can't see a central halo from it. I've also got a fast 50mm lens.

Come Autumn I'll try again my 50mm f1.8 at f3.2 and see what I get.

If you go for a 50mm f/1.8 lens then get the STM version, the focus mechanism is nice and precise and overall build quality is much better.
