15mm GSO SuperView Disassembly

I was curious to see if the 15mm GSO SuperView was a Bertele design or not.

It has four lenses in three groups, which is very reminiscent of a Bertele.

The lens groups are different however.

Unlike a Bertele the SuperView eye lens is convex and the field lens appears to be the doublet.

So I'm guessing not a Bertele then.

Mak - I have no idea what a Bertele is, or if you managed to reassemble your eyepiece, but I've missed your knowledgeable musings on SGL over the past year or so. Good to have you back.

Thanks, it's nice to be missed lol. I think it was a 1-1-2 form designed by Ludwig Bertele originally intended for military binoculars. I have another 15mm SuperView so this one got dissected. It was borked anyway. It is a bit of an anomaly in the SuperView series as most of them are modified Erfles probably. Turns out it's not a Bertele after all.

You dissection work was very educative for me, it's the first time I take some time to look at the inner parts of an eyepiece, with your pictures.  well done!

-->I will be there to look at another dissection if this happens again.

Yeah, I might do the 20mm SuperView next lol. I'm glad you found it educational, although I'm not sure what I learned from it (apart from substantiating the fact that it isn't a Bertele).

It's a nice EP for under 30 quid and does well in my f/5 ST80.

Reminds me a bit of the 19mm TV Panoptic.

Good looking EP. "Particularly useful with longer focal ratio telescopes" Hmmmmm....my Maks could make good use of these! My current Orion Expanse 15mm EP yields a 66 degree AFOV.

Yes they do well in Mak's. It does well in my f/6 Newtonian as well. I found Comet C/2015 V2 (Johnson) with the 15mm SuperView with my f/6.9 Newtonian (60x) and an Astronomik UHC-E filter.

Do I see a correct image (amici/roof prism) diagonal? Do you use it for astro? If so, how does it perform? Any artefacts on bright objects?

I have several Amicis, including Baader, Omegon, GSO and William Optics. The Orion (Synta) is pretty good, it's also light. The only 'artefact' I can tell with this one is when viewing Sirius.

For lunar/planetary up to 300x there is no discernible difference with a regular prism as far as I can tell.

For a while the Orion Amici even sported a helical lol.

Looks similar to this one, possibly the same?

I have a couple of those, one was borked, so I took the helical and the nosepiece off and put them on one of the Synta Amicis. The Orion was the first Synta Amici I tested it on.

IMG_20171105_133204.jpg.69cdf8148906be1822dba36749d2ce89.jpg

They're now on this 'Sky-Watcher' Synta Amici that came supplied with one of my Mak's.

IMG_20171205_112813.jpg.c06f3ea63e0ffbd63bdaba1a9aba3e93.jpg

I have this Baader 2" Amici as well. I tend to use the ST80's on a Sky-Watcher AZ5 mount/tripod now so weight is the main consideration. The 2" diagonal is mainly for my ST102.

IMG_20180201_163333.thumb.jpg.bd3595006449e11aa4fe1c849787f448.jpg

This is too heavy for the AZ5 with 2" accessories, as are the ST80's. So I use it on a Vixen Porta II with an SXG Hal-130 tripod combination. The ST80's work well on the AZ5 but I can only effectively use 1.25" accessories. Otherwise the weight and balance can be problematical. So I use the lightest eyepieces and diagonals I can get away with.

The resin bodied Synta & GSO Amicis are quite light but well made and good quality. Above from left to right: GSO, Orion, Antares & modified Sky-Watcher Amicis. Apart from the GSO the others are all almost certainly Synta. The only difference is in the draw tubes and nosepieces.
