Correct adapter for m42 lens to Canon dslr

Hi All,

I have recently began dabbling in astrophotography, and during an unrelated discussion have discovered my father has a box of old m42 lenses, one of which is a relatively old Carl Zeiss 50mm with an m42 thread.

I would be planning to connect it to a Canon 100d to experiment but I'm not 100% sure which adapter I need, or if there is anything to avoid / be aware of in general connecting an m42 lens to a dslr.

I've done a few searches, just don't want to buy the wrong one!

When i bought mine i was advised to not get just any adapter as some are thicker than others and achieving infinity and beyond focus would be a problem.

If you search these keywords >Canon >M42 >Infinity focus you should be OK, some are chipped and are quite useful if you want to use the old lenses for daytime shooting.

Appreciate all your replies, I've had a good read around the search Alan suggested (some great looking images!), and ordered a very slim, AF confirm one that looks as similar to the one above as I could find.

Lucky you that's a real find that box of lenses. I'd try them all to find the ones with good star shapes with little stopping down and minimal chromatic aberration. Focus on a star where the thirds intersect

Let you into a little secret, old M42 lenses with a chipped AF confirm adapter are superb for video work.
