Using Star Maps on tablets while observing

I use red film over my phone as it's safe and fool proof. On top of that I have the screen as dim as possible, just enough to be readable with my non-observing eye only.

An eye patch would be helpful, at the moment I have to make do with Mk1 eyelids!

Its a good start, but anything Mk1 will eventually be mk2... 3 and so on. I recommend one, it does help..

Is that Android or iOS Tim? The beauty of the accessibility options on iOS is that it applies to everything, so it doesn't matter if you exit SkySafari, everything is red and dimmed.

Use an unilluminated plug in or blu tooth key board, white characters on black keys.
