It's not necessarily easy to take good pictures with a smartphone, it takes some practise.

The key things are positioning of the camera, focus and exposure. You can buy an adaptor to help keep the positioning correct. Depending upon the eyepiece, sometimes you need to hold the camera a little bit away from the eyepiece to get the best image.

I use an app called ProCam 4 which allows better control of focus and exposure. Some people also use a neutral density filter to reduce the brightness but this is not something I've tried.

My best result is below. You can see a certain amount of surface detail, two moons and a shadow transit too. This was taken just handheld with an iPhone 6 Plus. I also use PS Express on my phone to do a little processing to bring out the detail.

The other lesson I learned is that if you wear glasses you should wear them to focus, that way the focus on the final result will be sharp.

That's mighty good with the phone Cam. Stu.
Did well to get moons too, and particularly what seems to be Io just off the lower limb
and it's shadow ?  This should give a lot of inspiration to others with scopes and phone only cameras.
As you said, it requires only proper use, and practice.

Stu,

Can I ask what your telescope/eyepiece combo was for your picture? I'm  very impressed ☺
