I'm sure the first Delos must be near on a year old now, feels like it!

Near? It goes faster when you're having good time recommending BSTs:wink:

Having ventured from my all Japanese made varied Plossl to Vixen LVW and SLV and also TV Radians I am left with a big decision to make.

From the ep I have my favourites by a long way are my 22mm LVW, which I know is a wider for and then my 20mm TeleVue Plossl is my real favourite ep of all.

Has me wondering as I favour 50 degree views and an up close and personal ep experience,

To update from my post and your fine input for which I grateful as ever.

I decided to stick to the Vixen SLV's, Vixen LVW and Baader Genuine Orthos.
Reason: Eyerelief and comfort in use.

I just need to track down a LVW to replace the 14mm Radian perhaps.....

Astronomers, always searching the sky and for sale adverts!

I also just prefer the smaller, simple design EP's.   A narrower useful FOV is all I need.  While my eyes can take the shorter eye relief I want to mop up those sharp views.  In the future my EP collection will probably have to change with my eyes.

Then a month later I buy a 22mm Vixen LVW.  What was I rambling on about here ? :confused1:

Perhaps like me, you like shorter fl with a narrower f.o.v and the wider f.o.v at longer fl.

The LVW has pride of place in my eye piece case also.

I think you are spot on here Alan.  I quite like the BCO 6mm so yep high power straw hole, low power more relaxed.

That's worrying and alike again, the 6mm BCO is straw like but the view is wonderful.

True, I had a very nice view of the trapezium the other night, the nebula was defined and looked clean through that EP.  The best view I can recall.

Your not mad at all!

Quality plossl's offer something special, a purity and sharpness that is often not as noticeable in wide field eyepieces. I love Pentax XW's, but a few days ago i used a famous named vintage plossl that gave a view of the moon and Mars that was considerably sharper. I'm not telling the brand of eyepiece I used until I've acquired a set of them, which may be some time, as they seem to be as rare as hen's teeth. Id willingly forsake my XW's for these eyepieces!

Go on then! Clave!! Sweet but skinny on eye relief.

Anyhow, I've since changed my mind! After a great nights observing last night with some great scopes and great eyepieces I am now certain I don't need any of these specialist eyepieces.

I was able last night to use some very nice high end eyepieces. These were eyepieces I've owned and used before but most of which I had sold long since. Naglers, Ethos, XW's and the real jewel a 5mm TMB Super Monocentric. The Mono was certainly the sharpest and myself and the observers with me thrilled at its excellence. Then I put my binoviewer into the focuser and, in the words of paulastro, it was "a Game Changer!" As wonderful as some of those eyepieces were, none could match the performance of the bino view. Initially we used simple orthoscopic pairs, then plossls, Panoptics and finally some cheap chinese wide angle, flat field eyepieces. All gave superb performance but it soon became obvious that expensive eyepieces have no advantage even in bino use. The mono view was always lacking in some way with regard to lunar and planetary.

I had a 5mm TMB Supermonocentric for a while. Probably the best planetary eyepiece that I've ever used but tiny FoV, tiny eye lens and pretty tiny eye relief. At least they were not too expensive, back then. They have leapt up in price now though !

I found it slighty better than the 5mm University HD ortho that I also owned back then, on the nights of best seeing. On other nights they were evenly matched.

The 5mm TMB Super Mono was probably the best single planetary eyepiece I've ever owned also. I wish id kept it along with the 6mm I had as well. If I could turn the clock back I'd buy the entire set. Possibly the longer ones in pairs. Last night I wondered if the Monos narrow field helped its performance. I felt that because only a small area was under observation, it was easy to see the sharp intricate detail. In wider field eyepieces such as the 6mm Ethos, the wider field was more of a distraction as I naturally wanted to scan the entire field, though when focusing attention on just the area visible in the mono, it was almost as sharp as the mono. I'm hoping that Roger, the astronomer who brought the mono round for me to use, will soon fall out with it and sell it to me, CHEAP! :icon_biggrin:

I bought and sold my TMB Supermono for £100. That was what they went for back then. Mine was from the 2nd run. Funilly enough I was using the 6mm and 8mm Ethos last night on Jupiter and thoroughly enjoyed them. I suspect the Supermono's go for more than the Ethos's do these days !
