Celestial Atlases - a motherlode of digital scans

Recommended Posts

Well, I never cease to be surprised by my own ignorance, but until last night I hadn't heard of the Linda Hall Library in Kansas, USA. Their motto is "Science, Engineering & Technology Information for the World", and they provide a Digital Collection with "Nearly a quarter million digitized images and texts offering researchers the opportunity to view books, maps, photographs, and manuscripts from the Library’s collections".

They have on-line and downloadable high-quality scans of 41 early books on astronomy (mostly Latin but a few in English). One is an original manuscript notebook by William Herschel:

They also have a similar collection of 62 early Celestial Atlases from the 16th to early 19th centuries. Impressive!

Go enjoy!
