I don't think M42 is 'quite hard,' I think it's one of the hardest targets out there - in the sense that it's easy to get 'something' but incredibly hard to get it all ad get it well. If it's any help, my personal breakthrough came with this turorial by Jerry Lodigruss. Ps has changed since then but adapting it isn't too difficult.
