Mono or colour QHY5

As a beginner, is there any major advantage to having the mono over the colour version if I'm using this as a guide camera?

Mono is usually more sensitive.  If I were specifically choosing a camera to be a guide cam then I'd definitely go for mono over colour.

I brought colour no idea why but it works fine as a guide cam, if i was to do it again id go for mono

If you will also use the camera to capture high frame rate video of planets, colour is worth considering as an option. For just guiding, mono.

There is such a difference in price between the two and was wondering if I could get away with the colour which is the cheaper?

I have never had a problem guiding with the colour version and as Andy says it can double up for a bit of planetary work if that floats your boat

The original QHY5 is similar to the current QHY5-II.  Same sensor, different housing and different firmware.  Lots of people have used it successfully for guiding so it's certainly not a bad choice to buy second hand.  If I were buying new though I think I'd probably take the QHY5L-II colour over the QHY5-II mono.

I'm reasonably sure the vendor of that QHY5 on AB&S is an SGL member, too.

I went for the qhy5ii colour but ATM I don't have any intention of guiding. Messing about with filter wheels while recording Jupiter images where rotation can take effect after 5 mins or so seems too much if a faff
