GAIA - The Billion Star Surveyor

Kings Lynn Academy, Queen Mary Road, Kings Lynn, PE30 4QG.  Starts at 7:30 pm

The opportunity to hear from the lead investigator for the GAIA mission ( Prof. Gerard Gilmore ) about how this spacecraft will take a census of around one thousand million stars, about 1% of the stars in our Galaxy – the Milky Way. Gaia will observe each star 70 times, recording its brightness, colour and its position. This is a discovery machine finding vast numbers of previously undiscovered objects.

Astronomers have been studying space for thousands of years and have measured the position of stars for most of that time, but Gaia will do so with an accuracy never before achieved.

Lynn and district Astronomy Society have extended invitations to all Secondary schools and Academies in the area many of which have accepted the invitation. Tickets are £7.50 on the door but only £5 if booked in advance.
