Object over North East Scotland

On 13th February at approx 19:00 hrs,looking south east from my garden near Aberdeen,at about the 10 o'clock position,I saw what appeared to be a reasonably large and bright "star" rapidly changing colour

Does anyone know what it might have been?

Hello,

Sounds to me like you saw Sirius. It is the brightest star in the sky and over here is stays fairly low. This causes scintilation (The colour changing) due to it's light having to pass through so much atmosphere.

or arcturus that shocked me first time, thats at bout 10 oclock position it shimmers green/red :shock:

Or maybe an Aircraft believe me you can get that effect from them I have observed them

Could it be one of the famous "Northern lights of old Aberdeen"

Going by your directions its Arcturus. Its a 0 mag star, yellowish - orange in colour. Low down, close to the horizon it will scintilate.
