The place to find...

Recommended Posts

You could try the book "Turn Left at Orion" , it shows you what you can expect to see through the eyepiece realistically using sketches rather than deceptive images.

It's online here to browse through to give you an idea of the content .... http://books.google.co.uk/books?id=PexKTfPy3voC&lpg=PA89&ots=LVe_6zky_a&dq=Struve%201702&pg=PA88#v=onepage&q=Struve%201702&f=false

I would also recommend downloading "Stellarium" from here ... http://www.stellarium.org/ ... a brilliant piece of free planetarium software to help you find your way around the night sky.

You can load your 'scope and eyepiece details into it to show you what you should be seeing.

This thread might help:

http://stargazerslounge.com/topic/196278-what-can-i-expect-to-see/

It's really not possible to be precise about what you will actually see though because that varies quite a lot with the seeing conditions, light pollution levels and the experience of the observer.

Under poor conditions even bright deep sky objects can more or less vanish. Under dark skies you really wonder how you ever missed them !

welcome to SGL David.

I use a 200mm scope similar to the one that you propose

to buy, and I have been simply thrilled by the views of

different astronomical objects, so far. You will not be dissappointed

Our Astronomy club has 200mm Dobs amongst the loan scopes

available, might that be an option, in your area, to help you decide.

John is spot on as always.

Those of us with your proposed 'scope can describe what we're able to see, but it'll be from our site with our seeing conditions and light pollution, not yours.

You don't want to be using sites with images on as a guide to what you'll be able to see anyway.

Images are often stacked and processed to give greater detail and colour and you won't see that many taken through an 8" skyliner!

As Saganite has said, your best bet would be to get down to a local club.

However, I'm very happy with my skyliner.
