HEQ5, EQ6 synscan and syntrek??

Recommended Posts

The HEQ5 and the EQ6 are/were versions of the mounts that had dual motors that did not provide GOTO. However they can be upgraded to full GOTO with an upgrade kit - this includes new motors, control board and GOTO handset. FLO look to be selling the HEQ5 but couldn't see the EQ6 version so maybe that is no longer available?

Next up the scale are the HEQ5 Syntrek and the EQ6 Syntrek, which are 'GOTO ready' but come with a simple non GOTO handset.

Finally you have the HEQ5 Pro SynScan and the NEQ6 Pro SynScan which are fully GOTO out of the box.

The only difference between the Syntrek and SynScan versions is the handset so you could upgrade a Syntrek to a SynScan by simply buying the GOTO handset.

thanks for the reply guys, now i understand! Just looked on your website Mike, great pictures and enjoyed your pier construction article

thanks again, sam

Thanks Sam, the pier was done at our last house. I'm currently building an observatory at our new house and at some stage I'll add that to the site but for now the work in progress is available here: http://stargazerslounge.com/topic/168972-yet-another-observatory-build-thread/

There is another important difference with the EQ6 range. The PRO version also has a dual saddle and extension weight bar - both of which could well influence your choise as the difference in price to get the PRO version is not that great.

If you want to use EQMOD (freeware and exellent!!) then you only need the Syntrek version of the mount (the one that has the correct motors) and a connection cable (£25) - download the software and connect up to your lappy and you have a goto system with bells and whistles as well!! (And a catalogue of several million objects if you download the extension catalogues and use Cartes du Ceil as your control software).
