Second hand telescope advice please

Recommended Posts

Hello again everyone :) So I posted a couple weeks ago about the 200p I had my eye on (like so many others!) and happily decided to start saving. My sisters just spotted the following local ad and I thought I'd get your trusty advice again...

"For Sale a 6” short tube Newtonian equatorial reflector telescope, in excellent condition, only been used a few times. Comes complete with a very heavy and sturdy tripod so no problems when windy. Also comes with a 1 X 12mm lens, a 1 X 20mm lens and a 3 X achromatic Barlow lens. £120. In addition to the above, I also have an EQ3 telescopic mount motor drive and fittings, complete with instructions (in original box) which is compatible with this telescope -£30 (cost £60 new)."

Any good? Or shall I stay on the 200p path :)

Jo

Hi and welcome to SGL

Is the 200P you're after the Explorer (EQ) or Skyliner (Dob) model? The ad is for an equatorial mounted Newtonian. As Kai suggests try and get as much info as possible before making a decision.

Can you seek advice from your local astro society before buying a scope. Personally I would hold on for the 200P. You can find details of astro societies in Cornwall in the link below.

Understood ;)

Maybe Santa will help me with the 200p... unless I'm getting coal in my stocking

There is always this:

Although you'd probably need a mount.

Or:

P.S. They just keep coming http://www.astrobuys....php?view=59126

(None are mine by the way, I stand to gain nothing from any sale :))

Looks like I've got a bit of bedtime reading here! Will do some (more) research, thanks. Good to know about the site anyway, I'm sure I'll get some use from it at some point.

Nice disclaimer by the way - as if I thought there was an ulterior motive :tongue2:

It's used from time to time, and I figured the help could have been misconstrued as something else. eBay can be good for equipment, but be very careful and make sure you know exactly what you are buying and how much it should be. Some accessories actually go for more used on eBay than they cost from a good astro-retailer.

If you can afford it, there's a 250px on sale in the classifieds section. ;)

The 200p dob is a great scope. Easy to use and I was very surprised by the amount visible in the finder scope alone! You may want to upgrade the finder though because even my neck hurts when trying to look through it!

What's different about my neck? I'm one of the younger members of SGL (14) so my neck is in the prime of it's life and as I understand it neck's get worse with age, not better.

My dad makes kneeling down look like a lot of effort and you have to be quite low and twist your neck a fair bit to look through the finder!

I meant no offence!

Hahaha! It's ok, I'll forgive you  I'm 26 so hopefully won't struggle too much - although after a few hours sat out in the cold I may change my mind!

If you're careful, you can avoid a bit of the neck pain by trying to use the finder as little as possible (just a quick look for the general area), worse is a twinge of back pain, and I'm only 21!

You can get a right angled finder, which saves the neck.
