Help: what's this rubber band for?

Got a new telescope

However, on the finder scope mount there is this rubber band, what is it for??

You should see a indented ring on the finderscope itself. The rubber band sits in this ring and helps hold the finderscope snug in its mount. Just slip the band onto the finderscope and set it in this indentation before you put the finderscope in its mount.

As above. The finderscope won't hold it's position without that rubber band holding it firmly in the front part of the finder mount.

Ahhh, that takes me back, I left it just there for about two years on my first scope before I realised what it was

I did too. It just sat there, loose around the bottom of the bracket; it took my Dad to tell me what it's used for when he came out once. The kick i gave myself...

When I got my 200P yesterday I got it second hand so I already knew it was intended for the finder. I just wasn't sure how. The instructions cleared that up. It stops gravity damaging the finder when It's unlocked from the bracket.

It's actually the "pivot" about which the finder moves in the bracket when you alter the adjustment screws (and helps to keep it in place). Without it, because the finder isn't a tight fit in the bracket, it would move slightly as the scope moved about.
