Jupiter impact.

I wonder if anybody else managed to get this.

At the very least it may make for some new features on the big planet.

An apparent object impact captured about 6:35 am on Sept. 10, 2012 from Dallas, Texas USA. The impact was observed by Dan Peterson visually this morning. His observation was posted later on the ALPO_Jupiter forum. When I saw the post, I went back and examined the videos that I had collected this morning. Click on the image to the left to see a larger version. This is a screen capture from QuickTime of a single frame from the video. The video was captured with a 12" LX200GPS, 3x Televue Barlow, and Point Grey Flea 3 camera. The capture software was Astro IIDC.

Looks like observers across the other side of the world can see no sign of a scar as yet.

I went out this morning, but no impact scar is visible.

(It should be above and to the left of the Red Spot, close to the planets equator).

I think I agree, there is something not quite right about the 'impact' - looks too sharp compared to the rest of the image, though I hope I am wrong.

I may get slaughtered here , but having watched the "video" it looks more like an out of focus star in bad seeing photoshopped onto a bit of video frame by frame . . . I'm calling FAKE on this .....

It does look odd. I am not sure it is a fake, it could be a point light source with a point-spread function of the optics distorted by seeing (e.g. multiple seeing cells in a big scope). I am curious how this pans out

Jupiter is known for its massive lightning storms, but these have to the best of my knowledge only been imaged directly by passing spacecraft on the night side.
