Syfert galaxy below Pegasus

Finally a clear night so I went galaxy hunting..

My target was NGC 7469 a sayfert active galaxy below the square of Pegasus. It was fairly easy to pick up as there was no moon despite its low altitude. I was seeing stars to mag 13.7 which again is good at the elevation of about 25 Degrees.

This is hubbles pic of it. Its the one to the top right. I could not see the other galaxy that was intereacting with NGC 7469 and I could only see the core of the galaxy.

Its about 200 million light years away and has a starburst ring which is a ring of star formation which can be picked up in the infra red.

So an interesting addition to my haul of galaxies..

Try it yourself and let me know how you get on!

Roll on the next clear night!

Yo, that's going to be a toughie at around mag 14. Will have a go, also floating around Pegasus are the

galaxies NGC7479( 11th mag spiral)

NGC7331(9 mag),part of Stephen's Quintet,

NGC7814(10.5),NGC7479(barred),a group NGC7465,7448 and 7543.

Just in case of clearness!

NGC16, 23 ,7137 ,7177, 7217, 7332, 7448, 7454, 7457,7469,7619,7625,7626,7678,7741,7742,7743,7769 and 7814.

These are from mag11 to 13.

There's plenty more go in the horse!

Nick.

Thanks for the list. Where did you get that, is it your observations...

I checked my observing notes and I have seen all the ones you list apart from 7543,7137,7454,7678,7741..

So if you have any observation notes on these I would be interested..

Mark

Farunj - I am glad you liked the picture..Its not mine its hubble but it is stunning, I agree..

Yo, not had much time, after getting the goto there is so much to see and share. I'll post anything spectacular!

There's a load of sources including Burnham's and the Herschels. It is just a matter of trawling through observations and making useable lists, but not nerdy or train spotting!

As a small group, there's a laser pointer on the goto and the bigger Dobs can then be swung into action.

Interesting collection of galaxies in Pegasus. I have been following the Herschel 400 and the 666 list from the Deep Sky watch - I have only been successful in viewing NGC 7217, 7619, 7814, 7448, 7331 and 7479.

Mark I will have ago at NGC 7469 to see if I can pick it up in the 10" Dob. I notice from Uranometria 2000 that it should be easy for star hopping from star 55 to a small group nearby.

I also cross checked where it might appear on Herschel's lists and I noted that it has been placed under class 111 which are 'very faint nebulae' so its not in the 615 list but is included in the 2514 catalogue.

This is a tought galaxy even in my 10 inch scope so it does not surprise me you struggled...My skies let me see stars to Mag 5.5 overhead...to see 7469 I needed a clear night with low moisture so that viewing at a 25 deg elevation was possible. I then needed a good 45 mins to get dark adapted and a cover to block out stray light..Then I needed averted vision and also having looked at many such objects I am now getting better at seeing them..even so it was quiet a hard object...I5283 nearby was however even harder and I could only pick up the core.

So I suspect with an 8 inch you might need to go to Texas!

I looked at your list..The brightest one you have not seen yet is NGC 7332 which is nearly as good as 7331...Also try 7177 / 7626 and its friends / 7457 and 7743 which are all visible in my 10 inch with direct vision so none of this only visible looking to the side stuff that you need with 7469..

Enjoy..

Thanks Mark I must give them a try. I know you have seen many galaxies but do you follow a particular list or are you simply going through the whole NGC catalogue?

Next time we meet at a star party we really must do an observing session together. I had a brilliant session with John at SGL6 where we were star hopping from one galaxy to another.

Hope to meet up soon.

Yes we must observe sometimes..I select galaxies using various methods. The latest is by using a book by Ted Aranda http://www.amazon.com/dp/1441994181/ref=nosim/?tag=yasni-20 from the states who has logged 1800 galaxies..I am working through the ones he logged as moderately bright that I have not seem...Hence 7469...This has given me a list of 50 more galaxies to try...which would take me over 600 if I can detect them...

Mark

Nick..of those you list 5907 / 6503 are pretty bright...5907 is a lovely extended one..
