That is what I thought so but I have a self cleaning sensor, but took the following just as a test (in focus against a plain piece of paper) but cannot see anything

So have just gone back out and tried again with this result

Will be interesting to see what you come up with.

Pouring down here still so no shot from me today....

Still looks like a smear of grease or similar to me , and there are numerous little dust/dirt marks when viewed close up .

I would give every thing a clean in the image train first , at least then you'll get a nice pic if your "possible feature" goes ballistic overnight and surprises us both in the morning.............. :laugh2:

check for dirt on your sensor by stopping the aperture down to f22 and then in Av mode shoot a plain patch of sky, doesn't match if it's cloudly or not. Then stretch the histogram of yur image to see any dust bunnies. It doesn't matter if the lens is in focus, in fact it is better if the lens is out of focus to check for dust.

About that smudgy thing. I have seen it on the sun for a while now. I thought It was my optics but, you never know we could be on to something here!

The smudge is just above the sunspots. Can you see it?

Certainly in the same area as mine Ant .... strange!

Thanks Kev - have only just seen your post and now the skies are dark so have set up in doors at have imaged a painted door as you have suggested and stretched it in much the same was as I did for the sun, and have come up with the following, which looks OK to me. No sign of any shadowing and the sensor looks pretty clean to me but I would appreciate your thoughts.
