If you could design a new eyepiece what would it be?

how about an EP with a photomultiplier built in to enhance deep sky objects

They exist, but you need to apply for an export licence to buy it from America and an import licence to bring it into UK. The image intensifier (photomultiplier tube) is military hardware as far as the law is concerned.

Edit: Just did a bit more reading on NV equipments and apparently you need to be a registered defence exporter to obtain the export licence. In other word, you can't buy it outside USA.

The Speers Waler is a fine eyepiece but the focal lengths are just too long. For fast refractors that fl zone between 3mm and 4.5 mm is critical for drawing out the maximum magnification under given viewing conditions. 5mm is too long a starting point. The TV 3-6 mm is also parfocal throughout the range, so you really can "zoom" in on the target. It just needs to be ever so slightly longer I.m.o.
