Sun today, how to sharpen image ?

Hi, taken with a web cam today. I would like to sharpen the image, not too sure if this is a focus issue or can something be done with afterwards with software, any suggestions ? Paul

Hi Paul, you could try the wavelet function in registax.

i agree, load the avi file in to registax and experiment with the wavelets

Is that a single webcam frame or the result of a stack? Let us know and I'm sure help will be forthcoming.

You could also use colour to enhance the contrast which would use the eye's perception of detail too.

It looks quite sharp already if it's a single frame. If it's a stack, wavelets will definitely help. You could also play with gamma a bit to enhance granulation.

I've had play with it in photoshop.

Firstly an application of FocusMagic

Then unsharp mask

Then a bit more Focus magic

and finally added colour

Nice shot! I just moved the sliders in levels to enhance the contrast, then gave it a few iterations of unsharp mask with a radius of 1 pixel at 50%.

It really is just a matter of playing around until you find something that you're happy with. Focus is still the most important thing though, but I reckon you've done pretty well with this.

Hi, thanks for the replys. It's a 25 second stacked AVI from a webcam. I'll have a play around with registax and Gimp. Dave, photoshop sounds like something I should also look into, what version are you using ?

Paul, it's sharpening quite nicely with Registax wavelets (event though you posted a JPG and blocking artifacts come out too).

If you're using GIMP I highly recommend the GMIC plugin:

It's a bit old, but it does an amazing job of upscaling, sharpening and tons of other good stuff.
