Imaging the Sun

Recommended Posts

Hello SGL people,

this would be my first post, i have been imaging the solar system for about about 4 months and have recently moved on to the sun.

I have a Celestron 102GT, with Neximage, DSLR Cannon 300D, and a white light filter.

I have attached some of my solar images below.

I would really love some guidance on how to image lim activity (eruptions)

The first image taken 8th May, Last 2 on the 30th March (all artificial colour)

Many Thanks

Welcome to SGL Zakkhogan. Your solar images are very good using a white light filter - so well done.

You seem to be asking about recording prominences, filaments etc. To do this you need a Ha filter/scope which is a very specialised and expenses practice. The cheapest solar Ha scope is a PST although Lunt make a similar priced scope - link here - http://www.firstlightoptics.com/coronado-solar-telescopes/coronado-pst-solar-telescope.html

I am sure some of the solar imagers will advise you further on this.

Exellent white light images - keep going with those and build up some experience in Solar imaging. To image limb activity and prominences you will need a specialised Solar telescope to observe in Ha (Hydrogen alpha) light - unfortunately, as MarkC says, even a basic Solar scope like the Coronado PST is quite an expensive bit of kit and there are not really any cheap alternatives.

Thanks Mark\Roger, to be fair that was the answer i was looking for, i found google quite unhelpfull when looking for solar photography (i think being such a dangerous subject theirs not much info around)

Any how a scope like that will have to wait a while i think!!

And thank you all for the encouraging words, And spoon please feel free to share your images on the thread (if you havnt done yoru own by now, ive been at work till 11:30)

Again thanks for the advice

Craig
