Apollo 35mm Slides

Moonshane

Recommended Posts

Hi all

Someone has given me 300 assorted slides featuring among other things, the Apollo missions, moon landscapes and photos of the sun. They include 'originals' of such iconic images as the 'visor shot' and other images well known from the time.

I know nothing about them but they are a wonderful collection and will be interesting the look through eventually.

They appear to have been sold by a company specialising in such items (I don't have them with me) and are really great.

Anyone know anything about these and the history of them etc?

Cheers

Shane

I'll ping an email off to a CAS member who is a slide fanatic, he might know something. He often does 'magic lantern' talks with a 1910 carbide slide projector and slides from the late 1800's :)

it would be nice to show these at a star party sometime, I bet they'd be enjoyed by all. if I can find out a bit about them even better!

Hi Shane,

The Apollo originals were Hasselblad 70mm. There were a few taken on Nikon 35mm but not on the Moon as far as I can remember. Only orbital.

Very interesting though.

Dave.

hi Dave and cheers!

I was not suggesting they were originals as they are clearly copies sold probably widely at the time but the quality is really nice. :) I hope the find a bit more detail about them though and hopefully Rik's mate can help.:)

No sorry, didn't mean that :)

The Apollo shots won't have been duplicates but the 35mm shots may be.

Your task now is to trawl charity shops to find a projector.

Are they dated ?

Dave.

Interesting Shane :)

I can recall Telescope House selling 35mm slide sets of various astro subjects such as Voyager images etc back in the 1980's. I seem to remember them costing a few bob too.

My dad used to take slides of our holidays - back in the 1970's a slide show, usually around christmas time, was a bit of a family event :)

Somehow running through the contents of an SD card is not quite the same :)

Got a reply from Eddie but not much to add I am afraid:

"These 2"x2" slides have gone out of fashion although I use them---trimmed my collection down to about 200 now--got quite a few of the Apollo missions and the sun. Do you have a slide projector for them ? I gave my spare projector to a charity shop 6 months ago. Can loan you mine if it would help at any time -- sorry have got the message wrong---thought it was you that had the slides. Patrick Moore has about 25,000 of them. The BAA have got rid of a lot of them. My Bristol AS has many but they are rarely used---powerpoint has taken over. A collection of 500 sold for ,if I remember, £15 last year on ebay. "

Sorry.
