Vixen Plössl NPL 4mm for my 250PX

Hi all,

Would these Vixen Plössls go well with my 250PX?

Good quality? Too much magnification (300X) ?

I hope to buy tonight, so I'd love any last minute opinions.

IMHO too much mag. my most used e/p in my 250 dob is an 8mm. but your skies may be much steadier than mine. maybe a 6mm?

My skies are pretty good here (southern Sweden). I'm more worried about having to manually guide at 300X rather than being limited by seeing. Maybe I will go for a 6 mm.... Hmmm....

there was a thread somewhere...most useless/hated eyepiece...the 4mm won hands down

I tend to think that 300x is too much power to be regularly useful but setting that aside, if you really want to buy a 4mm eyepiece you would find the 4mm TMB Planetary type gives a larger field of view, more eye relief and a larger eye lens to look into. Much more comfortable than a 4mm plossl or orthoscopic.

In my view the Telescope Services ones are the best of this type available at the moment:

OK, a bit more money than the Vixen NPL but the comfort of use is worth that I think.

too much, I would have thought. Mind you, I have got great views (GRS transit) with a 5mm BST in my 250 mm .

I used to use a 4mm NLV when I had a 250. Mine was GEM mounted so the 45° field didn't matter. The views I had with this combination were the best of Mars I've ever had.

With a Dob you will be nudging too often to take advantage of the brief moments of steady seeing.
