Entry level DLSR for Astrophotography

Recommended Posts

Our first child is due in May and my wife wants to get a DSLR so we can take some good photos. As I'm wanting to get more into astrophotography I'm wanting to steer us towards one that will be good for astrophotography too :(

We've got a budget of around £250-£300, I'd say. I've done a bit of reading and read that Canon are best for astrophotography, though my wife has been looking at some Nikon cameras.

Can anyone recommend any particular models or what I should be looking out for?

The Canon 1000d (if you can get one) or the 1100d would be a good choice. It's a little over your marked budget though.

Canon EOS 1100D Lens Kit (EF-S 18-55mm IS lens) from £379.00, UK Specialist Price Comparison Site, Camera Price Buster

As far as the quality of the images are concerned, Canon and Nikon dSLR's will be capable of producing good quality photos.

Cool, cheers. I'll try and push the budget up a bit more and go for the 1100D. That eBay seller would only increase my budget by £35.

I suppose I should ask for my wife: Will this be a good camera for taking normal photos too as as far as she's concerned that's going to be its primary use :(

I wouldnt worry about it to be honest... remeber you will need to get a memory card(SDHC class 6 or 10 if you plan on HD video recording) as well as there's not one included in the box...

If your looking for an introduction into DSLR photography then you wont go far wrong looking at the Sticky in the Photography section...

I've been reading this review: Canon EOS 1100D Review: 19. Conclusion & Samples: Digital Photography Review. It looks like a great camera and probably what I'll want but I'm a bit worried about the comment that say it's not so good for "extreme low light photography or anything that requires fast continuous shooting". Isn't that exactly what I want it for?

I was always a Nikon man.. since the 70's... but ended up getting a 1000D because of the better astro support for Canons. I've never looked back. If I was starting out again today with your budget I'd go for the 1100D without hesitation.
