You don't need aperture for imaging?

Talking of aperture and resolution - we could see the swirls the Whirlpool galaxy's dust lanes thru the 12" Skyliner 300P at the Star Party Cool

This could be as much about dark skies as it is about aperture. Or is it about focal ratio too. We couldn't see much of M51 in a 14" f10.

Bode's galaxy (M81) and the edge-on Cigar galaxy (M82) were also looking good. I have seen them both thru a 4" but through the 12" Bode's was 'bigger' than I have ever seen it and the dark patch in the centre of the Cigar was clearly visible.
