M33 from Kelling Heath

First of all I would like to say a big thank you to every-one who offered to help me put my tent up following my cry for assistance with a bad back. Luke on the next pitch and Dave King helped in the end and by the time I came home a week later my back was much better and I was able to do the majority on my own. Those of you who went home on Monday or earlier will be annoyed to know that we had some brief aurora on Monday evening, a real bonus.

I stayed for 7 days and the skies were 95% clear for 5 of those 7 nights. this is the first of several images I acquired:

This was done over 4 nights.

24-9-11, 22 x 5min

26-9-11, 13 x 5min

27-9-11, 14 x 5min

28-9-11, 18 x 5min

Total 5 1/2 hours

All Modified Canon 450D 800 ISO no filter, using the ED120

Guided with QHY5 and PHD

Unfortunately a combination of my old WO flattener (on 24th) and my new TS flattener (remaining nights).

Don't ask!!!

This is a crop towards the top left as I didn't centre it the first night and as this night has the most subs I am reluctant to leave them out.

Preliminary process using DSS and Photoshop CS3. Trying different stacking methods as when I use the "stacking in groups" method I always seem to get horrid streaks.

These are stacked as individual nights and then I stacked the stacks.

Wow... you were damn busy!! How did you get so much clear sky?!! :-) I guess staying for a week helps!

The M33 is really stunning, lovely black sky behind it, awesome star colours and loads of detail.

The M81/82 are great too... you got all the lovely litle whispy bits coming off M81!

Thanks every-one.

Were you using your peltier cooling on the DSLR?

Hi Sara,

No, I haven't started to use it yet as I feel it is a bit of a fiddle to set up and once it's on I can't switch the Canon on or off or change the settings.

Was thinking of re-selling it as I couldn't be bothered with all the fiddling, but might persevere, but I think I'll only use it for a full run one evening, not several sessions like I did at Kelling where I left everything set up for several days in a row. It will be too fiddly to keep opening it up every time.
