canon 1000d interface cable

hi im looking for a longer usb cable for my canon 1000d as i have built a observatory and need a longer lead to go into the warmroom say 3 to 4meters,i see canons ifc-5000u is pritty exspensive any cheaper methods about? would a exstension cable work or would the quality slow transfer speed down.

I think for that distance you'll need an active USB cable - they're a bit more expensive but it means you can more than the normal 2m that the passive cable are.

I use a 6 port powered USB hub at the scope for all the gear, and only one USB back to the PC.

I got a batch of these active USB 5m repeaters, excellent quality and price. I really noticed a difference with the quality of the guide picture on PHD...

I just use an ordinary 5m USB cable from camera (1000D) to lappy - works for me!

I have my 4 USB devices connected to a powered hub on the Pier, from there a standard 5M cable to the summer house where the lappy is..... This works fine and I dont even power the hub up and never had a problem.
