EQ5 power supply

I'm looking to source a rechargeable 6v power supply. I'm not keen to fork out for one of those power tanks as they're quite pricey and I only want to drive the motors, so I'm looking for a cheaper more conventional type of battery.

My query is does anyone know how many amps the motors draw?

Well under 2 Amps for most of the popular mounts - smaller ones are sometimes less than 1 Amp.

Could do worse than one of these - 12V out just like the "branded" tanks

I can get 2 nights out of it just driving the motors on my HEQ5

Slewing my 200P / EQ5 goto drew 1.9amps. IIRC the tracking current is around 475ma per motor

Some 12v battery packs have an additional 6v output - My Celestron 17ah Power Tank does. Best to check before buying

Is there any difference between the syntrek upgrade and the synscan then... My synscan goto runs off 12v (well 13.8v regulated to be exact ) which is in the 6v - 15v stated in the manual

I was referring to the 2-axis drive motors, not the synscan or syntrek - not sure which the original poster was referring to!

I wasn't advocating using a 12V cable, but a correct step down one for the mount.

Yes, the 6v EQ5 dual axis drive motors (not the syn's) :-)

Make sure you have the right polarity!

My EQ5 has the reverse polarity of my Vixen SP! I have to be very carefull... Ive used different design connectors so I cant make a muck up.

I have just fitted the synscan goto upgrade to my eq5 mount.

My question is.

Is the RAC jump starter ok to supply the power.

Yes the synscan upgrade allows 11-15v DC input so a 12v battery is correct. (Just be aware that the "ordinary" motor drive for the EQ5 is only 6v).

I didn't know EQ5 only needs 6 volt, if you can lower it to 5 volt you maybe can use the same kind of battery I use to my heating band:
