Flyover is likely a USA-ism. It implies the states that are not along our eastern and western coasts that are generally thought of as a nuisance to fly over on your way between coasts. A simple putdown in an entertaining sense, not in a malicious sense. I grew up on our west coast, near Los Angeles, CA, and live about 2/3 of the way to our east coast now.
