  1. I don't really follow. Do you mean you place a filter inside the tube someplace? My SCT has a glass front, so I couldn't do that. Isn't it just easier to use solar film on the front?
  2. Interesting that you use a refractor with no filter on the front. I thought that was a no no as the mirrors heat up too much. Thanks for the info.
  3. Oops! Now I've embarrassed myself. Thanks all
  4. woo!! those are great! nice work. I took my very first solar images yesterday and managed to capture the new spot using just my Canon DSLR at the prime focus of a 20cm SCT with Baader filter on the front and C Pol at the back. I think I am going to be getting into solar from now on (continuum filter on order). Your images have inspired me!
  5. Ok, so how can a completely cloudy sky be a Bortle 2 ? We've got 100% cloud cover! I live in a town and we are usually a Bortle 6. Or am I getting the wrong end of the stick?
  6. forgive the dumb question, but as my new Morpheus has a wider angle of view, it actually has to squeeze more stuff in, so the image will actually be smaller than it otherwise would with, say, a 12.5mm Plossl? So not really one to use on planets then? (as why would I want a smaller image?)
  7. I doubt there would be a lot of point in having a 12.4 and a 14 surely? Hardly any diff in power
  8. I'm sure the old timers on here know all about this, but I am sharing it for all the other beginners (like me). It's a really nice way to see what you can expect to see through your telescope. You can select the scope, the eyepiece, your camera, your target. Just amazing! https://www.12dstring.me.uk/fovcalc.php
  9. my new 12.5mm Morpheus has just arrived. It's HUGE! Never seen an eyepiece that big before!
  10. Sorry, what is an AR? Is that a sunspot? Oh wow! Yes, I see it. Just coming into view on the edge. Using a 9.7mm Plossl (200x) and a circular polariser 👍😃
  11. Thanks all. I guess I thought I might be able to see some surface texture with a 75x mag, but I guess I was being over optimistic. Or maybe, as you say, I'll see more just by dimming the image down a bit. I do have a CPL eyepiece filter, so I'll try that.
  12. So my Baader filter arrived and I tried it out just now. Problem is, I can only see a completely featurless disk with a 26mm Plossl (the sun almost filled the field of view). Am I supposed to be able to see anything more interesting than that? Do I need any filters at the eyepiece, maybe? To improve contrast or something?
  13. Great! Thanks so much everyone. People are SO helpful on SGL, I love it! 👍
  14. I bought one of these for my 20cm SCT https://www.firstlightoptics.com/solar-filters/astrozap-baader-solar-filter.html
  15. thanks. I tried using an adjustable spanner as a caliper and the bolt seems to be 7mm diameter. No idea what that corresponds to in old money (I never did understand Imperial measurements - all those silly fractions!) As for thread angle, I didn't even think of that! I assumed all bolts were the same. this could be quite a project!
  16. Thanks. I will need to try and estimate the size in imperial, I guess and maybe buy a few around the estimated size (as I don't have a caliper)
  17. That got your attention, didn't it? I've managed to lose my accessory tray knob. Anyone know where I can get a replacement? It's a Meade 390. I can't just buy a bog standard nut either because it's a US size (I think). Thanks!
  18. I did. Thank you. But I am struggling with this moon phase widget. Do you think there is a way to also have this one in my sig somehow? https://moonphases.co.uk/tools
  19. thanks so much guys! I actually found the Kaiser one on Amazon 👍
  20. actually, the Clearoutside widget should probably be renamed to the Clearlynotanygood widget. Here is what it's showing and yet we have completely clear skies at the moment!!
