  1. Camping mat is great material for dew shades, especially as there's no weight penalty. Do we take it that you'll be lining your's with some absorbent matt-black material?
  2. There can also be a subjective element for diffraction spikes, and that's the state of the observer's eyesight. Some observers stretch wires across the front of their refractors to mimic the spikes produced by 'scopes with central obstructions. They regard the spikes as being aesthetically pleasing, but not to Yours Truly.
  3. Hi Bomber Baz, I live just down the road in Accrington and visit Burnley twice a week on my Bicycle.

Have you considered  trying to get an East Lancs Astronomical Society ( or Burnley and Pendle ) together? Do you think it would be a success, allowing for the cloudy skies we live under?

Hiya Merlin. The short answer to your question is no, I wouldn't have the time, patience and/or inclination. I am already affiliated to Todmorden observatory and also with CLaSS. Central Lancashire Stargazers Society.

I know of at least 4 more astronomers in and around Burnley and have visited a couple but as for starting a group myself, no thanks. Too much hassle.

Go to the class one on facebook. Great bunch of guys, very friendly and we meet up quite often at various darker viewing sites.

  4. Imagine standing on a planet in the system and seeing three suns in the sky.
  5. I've seen the white dwarf in the Omicron 2 Eri system in a 60mm refractor, especially with averted vision. It takes about 240 years for the white dwarf to orbit the primary. The red dwarf ( not visible in the 60mm 'scope ) takes 8000 years to orbit.
  6. What's needed now is a dew/glare shield about a foot long. A rolled up camping map works well and there's no weight penalty.
