I'm proposing a short notice observing meet at The Blaenavon site on Saturday March 14 th., contingent on good weather of course.  

For those who have not been to the site before, please check the "Schedule" thread for location details.

Who is interested ?

Hi Mike,

What time do you usually start and finish these observing sessions?

If I was to attend I would be coming from Carmarthen, so a fairly long way. As a newbie I would like to be able to observe through a variety of telescopes, would this be possible?

Hi Peter you are welcome to have a look thru my scope , not sure wot one I will have with me either my 200dob or my 127mak ,we get a wide variety of scopes that people turn up with from small refractors to large (16inch dob) dobs , as for time we try to set up in the light and I stay till late (1am/2am) or till the dew takes its toll

Remember to dress for the COLD

Hi Peter, and Welcome to the South Wales Group, :smiley:

Our observing sessions are informal and friendly. We try to arrive by sundown if possible so there is enough time to set up without having to fumble around in the dark. Some of us stay a few hours, some occasionally spend all night.

Many of us travel farther than others ( about 74 miles round trip for me ) so I understand your concerns; its a long way to travel if the forecasters get it wrong. On average you can expect about a half dozen of us to attend, more if the conditions look very promising. Based on the weather forecasts, it's an individual judgement call for everyone as to if the drive is worth the reward; personally, I like to think so.   

You can expect to see a variety of scopes, Dob's, Cat's, & Refractors; some Observers bring more than one, and sometimes imaging equipment. You are welcome to have a look through my scope, and I can't think of anyone I've met who wouldn't show you the same courtesy.

Check this thread on the day at about 3:00 pm (1500) to see if the latest forecasts look favourable, and if the Meet is a go or no-go.  Hopefully its a go, look forward to seeing you there.

Hi,

Just noticed that its Wales v Ireland on the 14th and I,m staying in Cardiff for 2 days so I won't be able to attend. 

I will come to a meeting in the near future and thanks to everyone so far for allowing access to their scopes.

I notice Lenny that you have an NEQ6 and a 200 dob.

I have been doing a lot of research and soul searching and I think I have settled on a NEQ6 and SW 250pds a compromise in case I decide I want to try some imaging later. This can still alter.

I was at the Swansea Star Party on Friday nothing to celebrate the weather was very bad, but I spoke to some very nice and helpful people.

Alas, Ive got a ticket for a box at the Millenium Stadium where I'll (hopefully) be watching Wales deny Ireland a chance of defending the 6 nations title. It's my 15yr anniversary as an employee of the Welsh team sponsors.

Determined to attend this time so if the weathers good I'm going sober and will be up after the game though I'm planning a mega rugby day out in the pub on super Saturday,looking forward to both weekends.

My cousin works down there somewhere James, Neil doran I know it's a big place but just thought I'd share, you usually haven't got to go too far in Wales before you find a common acquaintance somewhere. Going to stay larger free on Saturday and will be off as son as the game finishes. Looking forward to it.

Dorothy & I spent the better part of today with our caravan, changing dehumidifiers, washing it down, and making sure all is in good working order.

We're still looking forward to spending a few days at your camping grounds later in the season.

Edit: The predictions look fair across South Wales for observing tonight, but not so good for Saturday at the moment, but that may change by Friday ?
