Jupiter and Io Transit - 19 Jan 2011

Managed to grab an early evening Jupiter - my first view of the planet in over a month. The SEB revival has really come on apace. Some superb detail seen in the belt - more detail than was obvious in the NEB. Mind you, the seeing was pretty erratic. Moments of II and down to IV at times with cloud coming and going.

Io's shadow is the main dot feature on the disc near the CM. It just so happens that the SEB's most interesting feature was seen next to it: a gathered mass of darker material that abruptly transfers to the southern edge of the SEB, leaving a much lighter area next to it. A darker area was seen centrally in the SEB further along to the following edge.

All in all a very exciting observation! :)
