Big Difference

Just browsing through some sites and came across the new Orion xx14g goto dob and was shocked at the price compared to the Skywatcher truss 14 " goto .

£2349 against £1690 is a huge difference for essentially the same scope.

Unfortunately it's a case of SkyWatcher being shipped direct from the far east vs Orion being shipped to the US first and then onto the UK. All those extra charges.

I was camped next to one of the Orion 14" at Kelling. The user had no end of problems with it, the encoders had to be replaced several times amongst other things. Although the dealer was helpful, really basic mistakes were made :s

Its a shame that most of them (Orion & SW) have bases made from chipboard too, not ideal in damp conditions.

I agree TJ, I understand the reason for the Dobs in the £200-£400 price range but when you get up to £1400 I'd rather they just made it £1500 (or whatver) and gave me a metal base.

or even a decent grade painted/stained exterior plywood base.
