Accidental Andromeda Capture!

I was messing about with a new camera lens and took a quick shot of the night sky to find I had accidentally caught an image of Andromeda!

There is no processing what so ever apart from the Zoom box.

If this is what you call messing about I think you should mess about more often brilliant! First Jupiter and now this!

Yep, I just sat the camera on its back on the ground and opened the shutter for about 30 seconds. It's a f/1.8 35mm lens, so it's very fast and also a wide angle. If the Moon was in the shot it wouldn't be much bigger than the galaxy appears!

Just had a quick look at the original file. 25s , ISO800 , f/2.2 and an automatic camera dark frame subtraction.

No. The Andromeda Galaxy is 3 degrees by 1 degree. The Moon is about half a degree. So M31 is 6 x 2 times bigger on our sky than the Moon. It would be quite a sight if it was brighter... ;-)
