Dazraz
Hi i have looked at stellerium and seen that Uranus is very close to jupiter - i cant setup tonight as i am out but can anyone tell me if i will be able to see uranus and its moons through a 8" dobsonian ?Regards
John
You can spot Uranus through binoculars so it should be no problem with an 8" scope once you have worked out where it is. It's largest moon, Titania, is only magnitude 13.8 (or thereabouts) so too faint for an 8" I think.
Tddun
Yes you should be able too, the 2 planets get even closer next month, that's when I'm going to try and look for Uranus with my own 8" dob.
ollypenrice
Uranus yes, its moons no, I would say. A few years ago Uranus was showing a clean disc in our 10 inch SCT with good colour. Now it is pretty much stellar-looking and I needed the star charts to decide which it was.Olly
Doc
When I had the 10" hardin Dob, I saw the planet but no moons, through the 16" I have detected three moons. So I would say No to an 8".
Rui
Uranus moon's are very difficult, even with a big telescope. Not only because the brightest one is around 14th magnitude, but also because it stands very close to a 5,7 magnitude planet.
richbyers
Though i have a smaller scope i have nowhere near seen the moons, the planet should be ok thoughrich
DarkerSky
I got Titania and Oberon in my 16". I have not tried to find any of the moons with aperture less than that. Still, I'd advocate giving it a go with an 8" in a dark sky location at high power and setting Uranus just outside the FOV to optimise your chances. You never know, it might just work... toml42
i saw uranus in my 8" dob last night, appeared as a tiny blue disc, don't think it would be possible to see the moons
