Just out of interest has anyone got low enough horizons to have spotted M31 yet? And at what time? I know its getting more and more clearer but im not sure how long id have to stay out to get a view

Best thing to do is use Stellarium and run the date forwards, so that you can get to see when M31 is visible at a reasonable hour.

From my location in SE England I have M31 at 45 degrees above the horizon in an almost easterly direction at 4am.

I saw M31 last night at around 2:00 am. I picked it up first with 15x70 binoculars then later even my 6x30's were showing a faint smudge.

Managed to grab 45mins of subs on it last night whilst testing my latest DSLR... Before the sky just got too bright...

STUNNING image there Peter. One thing i have always wondered about with Andromeda is the dust lane. Is that on the edge of the galaxy closest to us or is it on the far side?

I'm thinking it is on the near side of the galaxy.

Had a quick peek at M31 at around 2.30am Saturday, low in the north east with my 12" scope. Was in that area I was I thinking about looking for the latest McNaught Comet in Perseus...but a tree was in the way.

Not looked for it yet, best views are in the Autumn nice dark skies and M31 is high in the sky.

Paul, I've never thought of that, are we looking across the top of the galaxy or seeing the underside?
