Video function on Canon DSLR/Compacts for planets etc

Recommended Posts

I have a Canon G9 compact camera which has a video function. The settings are either Standard 640/480 pixels at 30 frames or higher quality 1024/768 pixels at 15 frames per second. If I take a video of a minute or two can this video be converted and stacked in Registax?

If it can which would be the better setting - high quality or standard?

Has anyone ever used the new Canon DSLRs - 500D, 7D or 5D Mk 2 to do this?

Any advice/help would be appreciated.

Hi Mark

I have a similar setting on my fuji cameras.

My AVi's have had to be converted in VirtualDub before registax will open them but once this is done they work fine.

I have fould that the 30fps means that you can do the Moon and planets.

You can get excellent results. My avatar is a pic of clavius taken using this method.

Cheers

Well I did a video of the Sun through the PST and as Ian stated Registax would not open the AVI files. I have now downloaded the VirtualDub software and I cannot seem to open the AVI files any different to the standard format which again will not open on Registax. Am I missing something - help would be appreciated.
