Question for Mewlon Owners

I live on the coast, well within 1 mile of it 😬

I wipe my lenses with wire wool and Dettol after use though, so they will be fine 😉

No scope is going to be safe near the coast 😱

I'd rather clean the corrector plate than a mirror in this use case.

Mewlons are not meant to good  near the coast due too sea salt carried in shore on the wind.

Now you tell me! Maybe that explains the hairy stars 🙂

Malcolm

There is a thread on CN around this, just search for Mewlon 250…

Its becoming increasingly hard to source a 250,  but very tempting…

Would a Mewlon 250 need a refrigeration facility for cooling ? 😃

Damian Peach presumably has some interesting options available to him re: housing / locating such a scope.

Put it’s in a sealed plastic box and leave outside to acclimate.

There are other tricks, Dr D has a youtube linked above on what to do…

That might be OK for the 180 or the 210 but I was wondering if the 250 would need something more "aggressive" ?

Remember the 250 has the nifty rear which opens out to aid cooldown, so pound for pound, its probably comparable to its smaller brethren

The 250 has built in fans if so recall.

Dr D made a cool down device for the Mewlonif memory serves.

Yes the latest Mewlon 250CRS has three rear mounted cooling fans with speed control, older 250 versions do not.

The CRS version also has an optical field corrector installed in the baffle tube which the original version does not.

I don’t think Daniels “cooling angel” is available to buy new anymore.

The hairy stars described are normally thermal related in this case. Even 2 hours may not acclimate an open tube unless you employ active measures like a fan. Yea, I stopped making the Cooling Angel's due to parts availability.

So the the most effective thing is to get air moving by blowing down the baffle tube or do the fans suck ? (if you get my meaning 😉)

I find the most effective method is to blow air onto the primary from a front mounted fan AND suck air out of the baffle.

This cools both the primary and the baffle simultaneously.

BUT, this Autumn I will be trying the plastic box method…..

Sucks down the baffle. It’s to supplement the plastic container approach
