Advice on a canon 6D

Recommended Posts

Hi i,m thinking of buying a canon 6D full frame camera, but am concerned it would be a bad choice for a 102mm F7 refractor, due to vignetting.

I have read it is only really suitable for lenses.

Other than the 6D can you recommend a good canon alternative.

Many thanks.

Mick.

If you are planning to use a flattener/reducer, you shouldn't expect much better coverage than an APS-C sensor size. The reducers reduce (pun intended) the image circle while raising brightness (to put it simply, like concentrated milk).

If you are planning on shooting only at native focal length, there *may* be some vignetting on a full frame sensor, but nothing flats can't fix.

The 6D Mk has excellent sensitivity and noise control at higher ISO.

So it may vignette, so what, just crop your final image, that's what I do with my 6D at 1280mm FL.

The big 6.5um pixels are part of that noise control, the image scale with the 714mm FL sscope of 1.88arcsec/pixel is probably okay for UK conditions.

Thanks for this.

Hi Mick,

Ive had a root around the old hard drive and found the cr2 files for the above images. M51 was shot with no flattener or reducer as was waiting for one from FLO at the time. Both M106 and M13 were shot with a Stellamira 1.0 flattener. The same as the generic OVL one. Stars aren't perfect and I couldn't be bothered trying to improve things at the time. They were shot during lockdown no. 1 and I was just happy to be enjoying all the clear nights we had. The vignetting clearly improved though compared to the M51 subs. Hope this helps.
